New York City
Another Visit Back Home
October 2025

3 Days in October and 3 Anniversaries (See Below)
We always stay in Midtown Manhattan for easy access to everything
including a local family restaurant in Hell's Kitchen with a beer refrigerator as old as we are
Starting from our hotel, we walked through Bryant Park
to Rockefeller Center and St Patrick's Cathedral

This took us through the garment district where Joe's Grandmother worked
We passed many ornate historical buildings

We vistited Rockefeller Center often
when we lived in New York

We used to go to the ice rink
and
the NBC Studios here

Anniversary #1 - 62 years ago we began "Going Steady" (10-5-63)
We saw a movie at Radio City Music Hall. I think it was "Charade"
Anniversary #2 - 115 Years ago today St Patrick's Cathedral was dedicated
Anniversary #3 Celebrating 1000 years of the Kingdom of Poland

We saw a Sunday Matinee
on Broadway
The Musical Hadestown

Dinner was at our favorite
Mexican Restaurant in Midtown

Maiz

Day 2 - Subway to Brooklyn
To visit Joe's Alma Mater - The Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn
Now the NYU Polytechnic Institute
Searching for the Bridge to Manhattan
Joe walked across the Brooklyn Bridge between school and his Wall Street job
The area between the Brooklyn and Mahattan Bridges was redeveloped in the 70s
and called DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass)

St Paul's Chapel of Trinity Church
is the oldest surviving church
in Manhattan

Joe's Great Grandparents
(Vanden Wyngaard)
worshipped at both churches

Joe worked in the Equitable Life Building (120 Broadway)
during High School and College
This fascinating new museum has been built near the site of the World Trade Center
You are surrounded by sight, sound and art powered by technology

This new subway access was built as part of the redevelopment of the area after 9/11
It includes a large shopping center
Back in midtown we went to our evening Broadway Musical

Day 3 - Today we will visit Queens - very important in our history
We took the subway out to Jamaica, Queens
This was the Valencia Theater
where Richmond Hill High School
held its graduation ceremonies
(Eileen 1964)

This was the F W Woolworth Building
where Eileen worked during High School and College
Joe used to wait on this corner for her to leave work
A few blocks from Woolworth's was Parson's Blvd
where Eileen would take the bus to Queens College
The 50 acre campus has changed very much
over the last 50 years

Photos of our walk through the campus are HERE
